Partly Facetious: land for building seven more Lal Masjids!
"Pakistan's sincerity in fighting terrorism must never be doubted."
"Who said that?"
"Musharraf."
"Why did he say that?"
"Perhaps to inform the Democratic controlled lower and upper house that he is still needed and is committed to what the US wants him to do and that it would be unwise for them to abandon him at this stage."
"But the US wants more than one number to call in Islamabad."
"Frankly, I don't think any of our other leaders would have done otherwise."
"You mean BB and Nawaz Sharif?"
"Yes, I guess that about sums up our leadership."
"And then there is the Chosen variety."
"Well, let's be honest the civilian prime ministers also choose their president and the chief of army staff - and if history is any judge it's just that they choose rather unwisely."
"But they never really hold all the reins of power if you know what I mean."
"They do at some point, they just abuse it and get kicked out. The two hatted presidents hold the power and exercise it when need be."
"That the only difference?"
"In my mind yes - the key words are hold the power and exercise it."
"I get it."
"But I would like to ask Musharraf why is he being so lenient against the Brothers Maulvi brand of terrorism?"
"The US does not care and is not involved."
"Don't be facetious."
"I think these Brothers have scared the people of this country much more than the tribes bordering Iran and Afghanistan, shall we say?"
"That is correct but I guess Musharraf doesn't want to open another front."
"This is hardly a front at this stage."
"And giving them land for building seven mosques seems to be too much of a concession."
"Who advises these guys?"
"Ah, there you have it - they rely on their own counsel - the trio."
"Musharraf, the Chosen One and Chaudhry Jaat."
"That's correct but power is disproportionate."
"In which case blame must rest with the one with the power!"
"Indeed."
